HELP MY NEWBORN GARDEN!?
Okay, so last night I built an above ground garden to put on my second story balcony. In it, I planted many fruits, veggies, and herbs, along with marigolds which the gardening department said would naturally deter certain bugs. I go out to my one day old garden a few minutes ago, and discover that the entire thing a 3.5x3.5 ft area is infested with small, black ants So I start inspecting each plant carefully... a tiny, white praying mantis on my strawberries, then dozens of ants on my basil Coincidentally, last night when I brought the basil home, there was a green looper Caterpillar on the basil. I took him off, and let him go on a bush downstairs, far away from my garden. What can I do? The ants are mainly around my basil, but they've spread to the entire garden. It's so bad, in the 15 hours I've had my garden built, I've gotten at least 4 separate spiders who've built their webs on the side of my garden box. Since I planted them only last night, they haven't had a chance to get rooted in the soil yet, so if I need to, I can remove them.NO INSECTICIDES This is my organic garden, afterall...

Gardening - Grass, plants, flowers etc some adivce needed?
Good evening,I need some gardening advice.I've got plenty of free time for the next few months. At the moment there are random plants and paving stones and other dirt lying around.Whomever lived here previously was a bit messy. So firstly I would like to remove everything. Paving stones slabs are pretty straightforward, as for the current plants etc, what would be the most effective method of removing them, so they don't grow back? Some have suggested that I just pull them out, seems a bit tedious. I'm thinking of shoveling and then putting some new soil on top. Any tips?Secondly, any tips on growing thick grass. I've seen some people grow grass but there can be patches.Lastly plants flowers.Could recommend some colourful ones.I don't really care whether they grow any thing edible, more to do with it looking nice and they should not be of any harm if consumed by animals as we often get humming birds and from time to time a cat or two.Oh and some people grow a sort of plant tree around their gardens, it acts as a sort of fence, really thick green, I actually have no idea what it's called, does any one know what they're called?Any other general gardening tips would also be appreciated.I've never done it before

Gardening question. Thanks in advance!?
I recently bought a town home and would like to plant some fruits and veggies on my balcony. Looking for some advice on what plants respond best to direct sunlight. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
